How to Develop Reading Skills?

A growing body of research indicates that reading literally changes your mind. Using MRI scans, researchers have confirmed that reading involves a complex network of circuits and signals in the brain. As your reading ability matures, those networks also get stronger and more sophisticated. Brain scans showed that throughout the reading period and for days afterward, brain connectivity increased, especially in the somatosensory cortex, the part of the brain that responds to physical sensations like movement and pain.

Start with subjects of your interests

If you are not a Reader you have to start with something that is interesting to you. You can start with fiction like mysteries, suspense, horror, romance etc. But if you like non-fiction material. You can learn a new skill, expand your knowledge on a specific subject.

Replace other forms of entertainment with reading

A good way to read more is to replace other forms of entertainment with reading. For example, instead of watching TV or movies, playing video games. This will allow you to read a lot more books every year.

Carry a book everywhere you go

Always carry some reading material with you, either in the form of a physical book, or an ebook on your smartphone or ebook reader. That way you’re able to read whenever you get a chance.

Find a good place to read

Something that will help you read more is finding a good place to read. This should preferably be somewhere quiet, without any distractions. You could read in your bed, in a comfortable chair or sofa, on a park bench, and of course – at the library.

Know when to quit

Don’t feel like you have to finish every book you start. If the book you’re reading is boring or not what you imagined it would be, simply drop it and start reading a different one.

Read for at least 15 Minutes Each Day

Developing good habits like reading takes consistency and persistence. So you have to start small. Find a time during the day, such as on your break, at lunch, or when relaxing at home, to spend 15 minutes reading help you to become a reader.

Set a Time a Read Daily

Now that you have your 15 minutes, it is important to make it at the same time if possible. Remember that good habits develop when you engage in an activity at roughly the same time.

Take the 21 Day Reading Challenge

It’ll help you to stuck to your habits. Set a goal to read a book in 21 days. Spending 21 days reading the same book will not only improve your reading skills, it will also help you get immersed in the material.

Expand Your Reading Material

Now that you have established your reading habit, the next step to keeping you interested is expanding the type of material you want to read. You can go from fiction to non-fiction, adventure stories to romance, or biographies to technical manuals if you so desire.
